Horsepower

One horsepower equals 33,000 foot-pounds of work every minute. This figure was determined by engineer James Watt, who needed a way to equate the power of a steam engine to a common measurement that everyone could understand. Since horses were the main source of power back in the late 1700s, this is what he used to create a basis of comparison.
